FOR THE VICTIMS OF APRIL 10-11, 2000!!
Mums carried them for nine whole months
Not once did they complain,
God had blessed them with children
Their children were worth the pain.
They gave them life – the greatest gift
They’d sing them off to sleep,
Singing songs their mothers sang
For hours in their seats.
They watched them as they learnt to crawl
And clapped when they learnt to walk,
They smothered their faces with kisses
When they finally learnt to talk.
They cried when they sent them off to school
Their children had now turned five,
They remembered the day that they were born
How quick the years passed by.
At times they’d come home after school
With blood stains on their knees,
They’d scold them when their pants were torn
“Kids, STOP climbing trees!! ”
They couldn’t stay upset for long
The kids were their pride and joy,
At night they’d close their eyes and pray
“Dear God – please watch our kids.”
The years moved on their children grew up
A man/woman they had become,
They instilled in them their wisdom
To teach them right from wrong.
They lay in bed awake at night
Their eyes glued to their doors,
They worried when their children came home late
Their country was at war with their kids.
They knew one day the time would come
When they would say goodbye,
They’d send their children to school
And pray they would not die.
That day arrived so quickly
They felt so sick inside,
Their sons/daughters were fighting
For justice for their colleagues.
But then by middays on April 10-11, 2000
They got calls instead,
“Parents – WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU
YOUR KIDS HAVE BEEN SHOT DEAD!!
The words had blurred their vision
They collapsed onto the floor,
The Kids with the bloody faces
Were now martyrs of their own Gov’t.
Millions of mothers around the world
Have made this sacrifice,
For the sake of justice
They’ve paid the ultimate price.
How many more do we have to lose?
As Gambian leaders play these games,
How many more must sit and wait
For that bullet with their name.?

THEN MAYBE WHEN YOU LOSE A CHILD
