The AU, ECOWAS and UN have called on Gambia Gov’t to Protect the Rights of its Citizens

A joint mission by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) Thursday 5th May 2016 concluded a visit to Banjul, Gambia and called on the government to protect the rights of its citizens, in particular, ensure freedom of expression, assembly, political participation. The mission also called for an immediate, credible and independent investigation into the April political incidents and urged the Government of The Gambia to allow due process of law.

The Mission was led by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Marcel Alain de Souza; the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Dr. Aisha Laraba Abdullahi; and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas. The Mission also included the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights through its Regional Representative for West Africa.
